Sony Ericsson is a phone manufacturer that has taken a lot of heat for not supplying its Android devices with regular OS updates. However, the company has promised to do better in the future, and that’s why the custom UI on its upcoming flagship phones in part consists of widgets, instead of the former solution that was time consuming to port to a new Android version.
To many people’s surprise, the company has now announced via its product blog that the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 actually will get upgraded to Android 2.3 Gingerbread in late Q2 / early Q3 this year. According to the folks at SE, their work on upcoming Gingerbread powered devices such as Xperia Play and Xperia Arc has enabled them to bring Android 2.3 to the former flagship as well.
Furthermore, the X10 is said to basically get the same type of functionality as the Xperia Arc, so the device will get more than just the features of Gingerbread. However, the X10 will apparently lose some of its current functionality, such as the camera’s face recognition and smile shutter, as well as Sony Ericsson’s Backup and Restore client.
